The Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet appears a golden yellow color in the glass. Aromas of tropical fruit, pear, apples and a touch of matchstick lead to a palate that is a bit riper than the Bourgogne, showing baked apple spice combined with bright citrus.
Grapes fermented in stainless steel tanks and near the end of fermentation, the wine is transferred to small oak barrels to ferment dry and complete malolactic fermentation during barrel aging. Batônnage is used sparingly as the wines of Chassagne are already rich.
All wines are aged eight to nine months in 20 –30 percent new oak.
Classic Chassagne aromas include those of petrol, rosemary soil and white peach along with discreet citrus nuances. The attractively textured and vibrant, if not super-dense, medium weight flavors display good length on the lemon-tinged finale. This could use better depth so a few years of keeping are in order.
