The Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Clos de la Maltroie appears a golden lemon yellow color in the glass. The nose reveals succulent flavors of juicy peach, fresh pears, exotic fruits and bright citrus followed by concentrated flavors on the palate with great vibrancy and a lemon zest finish. Slightly firmer than the Champsgains.
Grapes fermented in stainless steel tanks and near the end of fermentation, the wine is transferred to small oak barrels to ferment dry and complete malolactic fermentation during barrel aging. Batônnage is used sparingly as the wines of Chassagne are already rich.
All wines are aged eight to nine months in 20 –30 percent new oak.
This is aromatically quite similar to the Chassagne villages if perhaps with just a bit more elegance and complexity. There is excellent density to the delicious and intense medium weight flavors that conclude in a youthfully austere and bone-dry finale that comes up somewhat short. That may change with a few years of bottle aging but at present, this isn't as harmonious as the best here. Drink: 2028+
